BY Daniel Bampoe

In a grand traditional ceremony steeped in Dinka customs, the family of Kuany Ngor Kuany presented a bride price of 400 cows to the family of Ambassador Sandra Ajak, a respected journalist and the personal note-taker to South Sudan’s President, Salva Kiir Mayardit.

The event, held in Warrap State, has since captured national attention due to its sheer scale and the high-profile status of the bride.

Ceremony Rooted in Tradition

The bride price—or dowry—exchange is a deeply ingrained cultural practice among many South Sudanese communities, particularly the Dinka.

Cows are considered a symbol of wealth, respect, and commitment in matrimonial unions.

In this case, the 400 cattle, all in robust health and decorated in ceremonial style, signify a gesture of immense honor and admiration toward Ambassador Ajak and her family lineage.

The animals were delivered by a large delegation from the Kuany Ngor Kuany family, accompanied by music, dance, and traditional blessings.

Elders from both families performed customary rites, marking the beginning of a union that has generated both celebration and public discourse across the country.

Who Is Sandra Ajak?

Ambassador Sandra Ajak is not only a rising diplomatic figure but also a journalist by profession.

She has earned a strong reputation for her role as President Salva Kiir’s official note-taker, a trusted position that has placed her in close proximity to state affairs.

Over the years, she has been recognized for her discipline, discretion, and dedication—attributes that have elevated her to a symbol of modern professional South Sudanese womanhood, grounded in both tradition and service to the state.

The Groom

Kuany Ngor Kuany, the groom, comes from a prominent family with deep-rooted ties in the Bahr el Ghazal region.

His family’s ability to offer such a significant dowry underscores their wealth and social stature, aligning with the cultural expectations of providing not just for the bride, but also showing readiness to take on familial responsibility.

National Reactions

The dowry has sparked wide commentary on social media and among cultural observers.

While many have praised the event as a proud celebration of heritage and love, others have pointed to the symbolic excess as a moment to reflect on dowry practices in the context of gender equity and modernization.

Still, traditional leaders and cultural custodians maintain that such practices are vital in preserving identity and community values in post-conflict South Sudan.
