Dark Day For Democracy

Elections in this country have been rendered into life and death scenarios in this country by the NDC.

That is how the ruling party want it to be and that is exactly what we witnessed last Friday during the Ablekuma North rerun exercise.

We did not expect the process to be peaceful because we know the nature of the NDC.

Their earlier conduct when they discovered that they had lost the seat to the NPP speaks volumes about what they can do.

Having torched ballot boxes containing ballots awaiting collation in the custody of a school what happened last Friday was predictable.

No political party would behave the way the NDC behaved when they know clearly that they have won the polls.

‘When you dine with the devil let your spoon be long’ is a lovely African adage. The NPP should consider beefing their security in future electoral exercises. The law enforcement agencies especially the Police should have done a better policing at the venues their performance last Friday below average.

Unless of course they had special orders not to interfere when party supporters are attacked by their NDC counterparts.

A video posted on social media showed a journalist being slapped by a senior police officer, Chief Superintendent Lumor said to be the Divisional Commander for Adentan Division in the Greater Accra Region.

Radio stations amplified the police officer’s action which we believe has made it to places outside our borders.

Civility is necessary in law enforcement and police officers deployed for election and other duties should be mindful about their actions and conduct themselves as human beings and not robots.

What could have warranted the police officer’s misconduct? Perhaps the training of police recruits and cadets should be reviewed with a view to ridding them of such brutish behavior.

Those who understand the nature of the NDC and their proclivity to violence expected the kind of action which played out last Friday.

Unfortunately the bad press the ruling party incurred will be shared by the geopolitical entity called Ghana outside our frontiers.

Once in a while Ghana is mentioned as being a citadel of democracy a description which falls flat during such electoral exercises when the NDC throws civility to the wind and engages thugs to do their violent bidding.

We could have done better in our democratic journey. Leaders should avoid engaging criminals to go and visit violence on their opponents during elections. These are educated persons whose children are elsewhere studying yet would find kids of others in downtrodden parts to mete out violence on others.

Madam Hawa Koomson was assaulted by NDC criminals at one of the polling stations.

We expect the police to deal with the subject decisively after thorough investigation especially since video footages abound.

Police officers at the scene should be queried for being unable to protect a citizen, a woman, from being assaulted by thugs of course hired for the dirty mission by the NDC. We are waiting for the action that the Police would take.
