The former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is urging members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to refrain from making divisive and damaging statements against each other, warning that internal conflicts could undermine the party’s prospects in future elections.
Speaking during the NPP’s Post-Elections “Thank You” Tour in the Western Region, Dr. Bawumia reflected on the 2024 general elections, emphasizing the harmful impact that internal disputes had on the party’s campaign.
According to him, comments made during the party’s internal contests were weaponized by the then-opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to hurt the NPP’s image and electoral chances.
“As members of the great NPP, we should not make damaging statements against each other,” Dr. Bawumia cautioned.
“We all witnessed how the NDC used comments made during our internal contest to hurt our campaign in 2024. We must not allow that to happen again.”
The former Vice President’s remarks come at a time when the NPP is seeking to heal from the bruises of a fiercely contested 2024 internal presidential primary, which saw sharp divisions among key figures.
Though Dr. Bawumia eventually emerged as the NPP’s presidential candidate, internal grievances and public criticisms from party members created fertile ground for the NDC’s attacks during the national campaign, contributing significantly to the party’s electoral difficulties.
The Western Region stop of the tour saw large gatherings of party faithful and regional executives, who reaffirmed their support for the leadership of the party’s overarching vision for Ghana’s development.
Dr. Bawumia stressed that while internal contests are natural in any democratic organization, it is critical for party members to remain mindful of the bigger picture — ensuring that the NPP presents a united front to Ghanaians.
