Bawumia Secures Early Parliamentary Backing For 2028 Presidential Race

Former Vice President and 2024 Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has received a major boost in his anticipated bid to lead the party again in the 2028 general elections, after a significant group of NPP Members of Parliament formally declared their support for his retention as flagbearer.

On Thursday morning, a delegation of 67 MPs visited Dr. Bawumia at his office in Accra to pledge their backing.

The move comes at a time when the party is yet to officially open nominations for its next presidential primary schedule for January 2026, but signals growing momentum within the party’s parliamentary caucus for Dr. Bawumia’s continued leadership.

Speaking to the media after the meeting, Dr. Bawumia described the endorsement as a “strong show of support,” highlighting its importance not only in numbers but also in political influence.

“This was a very happy visit. A courtesy call and a declaration of support. I’m particularly grateful that over 60 Members of Parliament have thrown their weight behind me,” Bawumia said.

“Given that we have 88 NPP MPs in total, this is a very significant show of support.”

Dr. Bawumia emphasized that Members of Parliament wield substantial influence within their constituencies, making their support critical to party unity and grassroots mobilization.

He also underscored the importance of leveraging this endorsement to begin preparations for future party and national development goals.

“I thank them and I thank God for this strong show of support. Now the hard work begins. We must work together to help the party and the country,” he said.

Though the NPP is still recovering from its narrow loss in the 2024 general elections, Thursday’s show of unity among the party’s MPs suggests that Dr. Bawumia remains a central figure in the party’s future strategy.

His campaign in the 2024 elections, which was focused on digital transformation, economic innovation, and continuity of Akufo-Addo’s policies, still resonates with a significant segment of the party faithful.

Party insiders note that while no formal internal campaign has been launched for 2028, this early endorsement could signal an attempt by key party actors to consolidate support around Bawumia and avoid the bitter internal divisions that marked previous primaries.
