Bawumia Tasks New Greater Accra NPP Leadership With Winning More Seats In 2028

New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has thrown his support behind newly elected Greater Accra Regional Chairman Dr Bernard Okoe Boye, describing him as a humble and unifying figure capable of helping the party make significant electoral gains in the region ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Dr Bawumia made the remarks when Dr Okoe Boye led a delegation of newly elected regional executives and constituency chairpersons to pay a courtesy call on him at his residence in Tseaddo following the completion of the NPP’s regional executive elections.

The meeting provided an early opportunity for the NPP’s presidential candidate and the new Greater Accra regional leadership to discuss the task ahead after the party’s internal elections, with particular emphasis on unity, reconciliation and rebuilding the party’s electoral fortunes.

Bawumia backs Okoe Boye’s leadership

Welcoming the delegation, Dr Bawumia spoke highly of Dr Okoe Boye and endorsed his emergence as the new leader of the party’s regional structure.

He described the former Health Minister as “a unifier, humble and a good man”, expressing confidence that his leadership style could help bring together different interests within the party after the competitive regional elections.

Dr Bawumia also expressed optimism about the electoral prospects of the NPP under Dr Okoe Boye’s leadership, particularly in Greater Accra, where the party is seeking to recover parliamentary seats it lost in the 2024 general elections.

“I believe he is going to win us a lot of seats in the Greater Accra Region,” Dr Bawumia said.

The endorsement places considerable expectations on the new regional chairman, who will now be required to translate the confidence expressed by the party’s flagbearer into organisational and electoral gains across the region.

Okoe Boye pledges to make Bawumia President

Dr Okoe Boye, for his part, used the meeting to declare his commitment to Dr Bawumia’s presidential bid.

Addressing the flagbearer, the newly elected chairman pledged the full support of the Greater Accra regional leadership and indicated that the party’s new executives would work relentlessly to mobilise voters for the 2028 election.

He declared that the regional executives “shall not rest until we make Dr Mahamudu Bawumia President of the Republic of Ghana.”

The pledge reflects the immediate political direction expected from the newly elected regional executives as the NPP moves from its internal elections into preparations for the national electoral contest.

Bawumia calls for reconciliation

While welcoming the new leadership, Dr Bawumia cautioned against allowing the internal elections to create lasting divisions within the party.

He urged the newly elected executives and constituency chairpersons to reconcile with their former competitors and bring together the different skills, experience and support bases that emerged during the contests.

According to Dr Bawumia, unity will be a key ingredient for victory in the 2028 elections.

His appeal comes after a series of competitive regional contests in which candidates fought for control of the NPP’s structures. With those elections now concluded, the flagbearer wants the party to shift its attention from internal competition to the broader objective of winning the next general election.

He also indicated his willingness to work with members across the party’s various structures, stressing the importance of inclusivity as the NPP prepares for the electoral battle ahead.

Greater Accra becomes critical battleground

The Greater Accra Region is expected to occupy a central position in the NPP’s 2028 strategy.

The region has a large and diverse electorate and has historically been a competitive political battleground. The NPP’s performance in the region in the 2024 elections exposed areas where the party needs to improve its grassroots organisation and parliamentary representation.

Dr Bawumia’s confidence that Okoe Boye can deliver more seats therefore comes with a significant political assignment for the new regional administration.

The chairman and his executives will be expected to strengthen constituency structures, mobilise supporters, resolve internal disagreements and broaden the party’s appeal among voters.

The task is not limited to the regional leadership. The constituency chairpersons who accompanied Dr Okoe Boye to the meeting will also play a key role in translating the regional strategy into constituency-level mobilisation.

Regional elections mark next phase of NPP rebuilding

The meeting with Dr Bawumia came shortly after the NPP completed its regional executive elections on August 15, 2026.

The elections formed part of a wider internal reorganisation following the party’s defeat in the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections.

Across the country, new regional chairmen and executives have now been elected to lead the next phase of the party’s organisational activities.

Dr Bawumia had earlier congratulated the newly elected regional executives and urged unsuccessful candidates to support the winners, stressing that the internal contests were over and that the greater task was to restore unity and renewed energy ahead of 2028.

His meeting with the Greater Accra executives reinforced that message, with the emphasis shifting from who won the internal contests to how the party can use its new leadership structures to regain political ground.
