Black Maidens Defeat Argentina To Reach U-17 World Cup Quarter-Finals

BY GRACE ZIGAH

Ghana’s Black Maidens have booked their place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after defeating Argentina 5-4 on penalties following a tense 1-1 draw in regulation time on Wednesday.

Despite being reduced to 10 players late in the contest, the Black Maidens demonstrated resilience to survive Argentina’s late comeback and hold their nerve in the penalty shootout to keep their World Cup campaign alive.

Jessica Appiah Gives Ghana the Lead

Ghana made a positive start to the Round of 16 encounter and took the lead in the 16th minute through Jessica Appiah, who finished after being set up by Obinsrewuo.

The early breakthrough gave the Black Maidens confidence as they looked to take control of the match and secure a place in the quarter-finals.

Ghana maintained their advantage until half-time but missed several opportunities to extend their lead, leaving the contest delicately poised as Argentina continued searching for a way back into the game.

Goalkeeper Belinda Aklie proved instrumental during the encounter, producing a series of important saves to keep Ghana in front as the South Americans increased the pressure.

Red Card Changes the Course of the Match

The contest took a difficult turn for Ghana in the 77th minute when Hajara Adam received a second yellow card and was sent off, forcing the Black Maidens to continue with 10 players.

Argentina took advantage of their numerical superiority and intensified their search for an equaliser.

Their persistence eventually paid off in the 86th minute when Mercedes Diz rose to head home and restore parity at 1-1.

The goal was Diz’s seventh of the tournament and dealt a blow to Ghana’s hopes of securing victory within regulation time.

Neither side managed to find a decisive goal before the final whistle, sending the Round of 16 tie into a penalty shootout to determine which team would advance.

With a place in the quarter-finals at stake, Ghana kept their composure during the shootout to secure a 5-4 victory over Argentina.

The result rewarded the team’s determination after a match in which they had led for much of the contest before conceding a late equaliser while playing with 10 players.

The victory also underlined the importance of Aklie’s saves and Ghana’s ability to remain competitive under pressure in a knockout fixture where one mistake could have ended their campaign.

Ghana Renew World Cup Quarter-Final Tradition

The qualification continues Ghana’s notable history at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.

The Black Maidens previously reached the quarter-finals in the 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2018 editions. Their best performance came in 2012 in Azerbaijan, where Ghana claimed the bronze medal.

Their return to the tournament after an eight-year absence makes the latest achievement particularly significant for the team and Ghanaian women’s football.

Having negotiated the Round of 16 against Argentina, the Black Maidens will now turn their attention to the quarter-finals, where they are scheduled to face the winner of the encounter between Japan and Kenya.
