In what could become one of the most anticipated presidential primaries in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) history, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, Member of Parliament for Abetifi and a key figure in the opposition party, has taken a significant step toward contesting the party’s flagbearer position ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Though he has not officially declared his candidacy, Acheampong confirmed in a public letter released this week that he has formed an exploratory committee to assess the viability of his presidential ambitions.
While he is testing the waters, those interested in contesting the flagbearership race are already swimming in the waters.
The committee will consult key party stakeholders and grassroots members, with findings expected within four weeks.
“I recognize that the New Patriotic Party finds itself at a pivotal juncture which calls not only for unity but also for a renewed commitment to our core values,” Bryan Acheampong wrote.
However, source close to the aspiring candidate said the Abetifi MP has made up his mind to contest having set up an elaborate campaign office and ready to unveil his ambitions.
“After growing encouragement from a broad spectrum of party faithful… I have decided to form an exploratory committee.”
The announcement comes amid growing speculation within the party following public remarks by former Asante Akim North MP, Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi, who recently described Acheampong as “a unifier” and indicated that he was preparing to enter the race.
In a widely circulated video, Appiah-Kubi positioned Acheampong as a candidate capable of leading the NPP into a new era.
Long Political Trajectory
Bryan Acheampong’s political journey has been marked by loyalty and deep institutional knowledge of the NPP. Beginning as a grassroots organizer and staffer, he has since served as a four-term legislator, a cabinet minister, and a key member of several parliamentary committees, including Foreign Affairs, Defence and Interior, and Appointments.
His roles within government have spanned national security and interior portfolios to his last position as Minister for Food and Agriculture.
He has also been a longtime financier of the NPP, which he credits for shaping his commitment to the party’s ideals.
“Everything within me and every resource at my disposal have been put to the service of the party and I will continue to serve,” he affirmed in his statement.
From Suhum to the Global Stage
Born on November 27, 1972, in Suhum, Eastern Region, Bryan Acheampong’s career began far from the Ghanaian political scene.
A retired officer of the United States Air Force with specializations in anti-terrorism and defence, he returned home with the intent to serve both in government and business.
His academic resume is as impressive as his public service record.
Acheampong holds a Bachelor’s in Business Management and an MBA from Johnson and Wales University, a Master of Arts in Security and Intelligence from the University of Leicester, a Master of Professional Studies in Applied Intelligence from Georgetown University, and a PhD in Information Systems from the University of Ghana.
A published academic with over a dozen research papers to his name, he has also completed executive programs at institutions such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Ghana Business School.
Entrepreneur and Philanthropist
Beyond politics, Acheampong is a seasoned entrepreneur. He owns Rock City Hotel, one of the largest hospitality ventures in the country, located in Kwahu.
His business footprint spans real estate, media, technology, and agribusiness.
However, his business interests have not been without controversy.
His attempt to purchase hotels owned by the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has been a topic of national debate, fueling criticism from sections of the public and political opponents who question the optics of a sitting minister acquiring public assets.
The Road to 2028
Should he officially declare, Bryan Acheampong would enter a competitive field that is expected to include heavyweights such as former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Kennedy Agyapong.
Both men command loyal bases within the NPP and have signaled continued interest in the party’s top spot after the 2024 election.
Dr Bryan Acheampong’s likely candidacy adds a new dimension—technocratic experience combined with a reputation for discipline, organizational loyalty, and a message centered on unity and economic renewal.
Eyes on the Future
In his statement, Dr. Acheampong called on NPP members to remain focused, disciplined, and united as the party gears up for internal contests.
“May we remain steadfast in spirit and decorous in conduct in the pursuit of progress, inclusivity, and effective leadership for Ghana,” he urged.
