Deadly Explosion Hits Hamile, Immigration Officer Killed

The government has imposed an 11-hour nightly curfew on Hamile Township and surrounding communities in the Lambussie District of the Upper West Region following a deadly dynamite explosion that claimed the life of a Ghana Immigration Service officer and left another officer critically injured.

The restriction, which took immediate effect on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, is part of emergency security measures introduced by the government to contain tensions and restore calm following the explosion and reported security disturbances in the border community.

The Minister for the Interior imposed the curfew on the advice of the National Security Council and through an Executive Instrument, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of the Interior.

Under the directive, residents are prohibited from moving within Hamile and its surrounding communities between 6:00 pm and 5:00 am every day.

The government has also announced a total ban on the possession of arms, ammunition and other offensive weapons within the affected communities, warning that anyone found with such items will be arrested and prosecuted.

“Any person found with any arms or ammunition will be arrested and prosecuted,” the Ministry cautioned.
The curfew follows an explosion involving dynamite at Hamile that reportedly killed an Immigration Service officer, while another sustained critical injuries.

Although details surrounding the circumstances of the explosion remain unclear, preliminary information from security sources in the area suggests that the incident occurred after civilians travelling along an unauthorised route encountered security personnel at a checkpoint.

The circumstances leading to the explosion, including how the dynamite was obtained, who was carrying it and what exactly happened during the encounter, are yet to be fully established.

The incident has raised serious security concerns in Hamile, a border community in the Upper West Region where effective border monitoring and cooperation between residents and security agencies are important to maintaining public safety.

The government’s decision to impose the curfew and weapons restriction signals an attempt to prevent further disturbances while security authorities work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

In its statement, the Ministry of the Interior appealed to traditional authorities, opinion leaders, the youth and residents to exercise restraint and avoid actions that could worsen the situation.

Government urged residents to channel their grievances through peaceful and non-violent means, stressing the need for cooperation to restore normalcy in the area.

“Government urges Chiefs, Opinion Leaders, Youth and People of the area to exercise restraint in the face of the challenges confronting them and to use non-violent.
