The contest for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Eastern Regional Treasurer position has taken a dramatic turn following the withdrawal of one of the aspirants, Edmund Boateng, who has officially stepped down from the race and endorsed fellow contender William Amankrah ahead of the party’s Regional Executive Elections.
The decision comes as the NPP intensifies preparations for its Regional Delegates Conference, where delegates across the 16 regions will elect new regional executives to steer the affairs of the party as part of its nationwide restructuring exercise following its defeat in the 2024 general elections.
Mr. Boateng announced that after what he described as careful consultations and deep reflection, he had decided to withdraw his candidacy in the interest of party unity and cohesion.
According to him, the collective interest of the NPP must always take precedence over individual political ambition.
He said his decision was motivated by the need to foster unity within the party and ensure that the Eastern Regional branch presents a united front as it prepares for the 2028 general elections.
In throwing his full support behind William Amankrah, Mr. Boateng appealed to all his supporters, campaign team members, and delegates who had pledged their support for his candidature to transfer that support to Mr. Amankrah.
He urged them to work diligently and mobilize votes for Mr. Amankrah to ensure his victory in the upcoming Eastern Regional Executive Elections, expressing confidence that his preferred candidate possesses the leadership qualities needed to serve as the party’s Regional Treasurer.
Mr. Boateng also expressed gratitude to everyone who stood by him throughout his campaign, thanking his supporters, campaign coordinators, and party delegates for their encouragement, loyalty, and commitment during his bid for the position.
His withdrawal is expected to reshape the dynamics of the contest for the Regional Treasurer position, with political observers suggesting that the endorsement could significantly boost William Amankrah’s chances by consolidating support from delegates who had previously aligned themselves with Mr. Boateng’s campaign.
The development has also been interpreted by many within the party as a demonstration of political maturity and sacrifice, with some party faithful describing the decision as one that places the unity and future of the NPP above personal aspirations.
The Eastern Regional Executive Elections form part of the NPP’s broader internal electoral calendar, which follows the successful conduct of polling station, electoral area and constituency executive elections.
The regional elections are expected to produce a new leadership team that will oversee the party’s affairs in the region before national executive elections later this year.
