GWL Shuts Down Weija Water Treatment Plant For Maintenance

The Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has announced a scheduled shutdown of the Weija Water Treatment Plant,Weija Water Treatment Plant, set for Friday, 19th December 2025, from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

The temporary closure is to facilitate essential maintenance work aimed at strengthening the reliability and safety of water supply across the capital.

The Weija plant, one of the largest water treatment facilities in the country, plays a pivotal role in supplying potable water to Accra and surrounding areas.

This maintenance exercise is part of GWL’s ongoing efforts to sustain infrastructure integrity and improve service delivery, particularly as demand for water spikes during the Christmas festivities.

According to Adam Mutawakilu, Acting Managing Director of GWL, “This maintenance exercise is crucial for sustaining the integrity of our water infrastructure and improving service delivery. We have deployed all necessary resources and will work diligently to complete the task on schedule.”

Communities Affected

Water supply disruptions are expected to affect multiple communities in Accra, including Accra Central, Dansoman, Mallam, Weija, Gbawe, McCarthy Hill, Kaneshie, Odorkor, Korle Bu, Mamprobi, Chorkor, Abeka, La Paz, Tesano, Kokomlemle, Alajo, Nima, Maamobi, Dzorwulu, Abelemkpe, and adjoining areas.

GWL has urged residents and businesses in the affected zones to store adequate water ahead of the shutdown to minimize inconvenience.

Context

The Weija Water Treatment Plant has historically undergone periodic maintenance to ensure operational efficiency and prevent large-scale service interruptions.

GWL has faced challenges in recent years, particularly during peak festive seasons, when high water demand places additional strain on existing infrastructure.

The company has continually emphasized proactive maintenance as a strategy to forestall sudden breakdowns that could leave thousands without water.

Management has assured that sufficient technical teams and logistics have been mobilized to complete the maintenance within the stipulated 12-hour window.

Production and distribution of water will resume immediately upon completion of the work. GWL also emphasized that this exercise forms part of a broader commitment to delivering safe, reliable, and sustainable water supply to all customers.
