H1N1 Virus Detected in Eastern Region Schools

Health officials in the Eastern Region have activated emergency protocols following the confirmation of nine cases of the H1N1 influenza virus at Anum Senior High School.

The development has sparked concern among education and health authorities as efforts intensify to prevent a wider outbreak among school populations.

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) confirmed that the affected students began showing flu-like symptoms last week.

Following the emergence of a respiratory illness cluster on campus, 25 samples were taken and sent to the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research, with nine testing positive for the H1N1 virus, a strain of swine flu known for its potential to spread rapidly in densely populated environments.

In a related situation, health teams are monitoring a possible second cluster of infections at Boso Senior High School, where 44 students have reported symptoms similar to those of the infected Anum SHS students.

While awaiting confirmation, all 44 suspected cases have been isolated as a precaution, and their samples are undergoing testing.

The GHS has since issued an urgent directive for all affected students to adopt COVID-19-style safety protocols, including mandatory face masks, hand hygiene measures, and social distancing.

This comes amid growing fears that the virus, which caused global concern during the 2009 pandemic, could disrupt academic activities if not swiftly contained.
