Heavy Rains Sweep Woman Into Nima Drain

Saturday morning heavy rainfall in Accra, caused severe flooding in Nima, resulting in a young woman being swept away by fast-moving floodwaters.

Eyewitnesses say several people rushed to help, but the force of the water was too strong.

Among those attempting the rescue was Gerhard Kwamina Asomontsi, a student at the University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC), formerly the Ghana Institute of Journalism, who was on his way to sit for an examination.

Speaking to journalist Gerhard recounted the ordeal: “I was heading to Tesano for my exam when the rain started. I diverted through Kokomlemle and Nima and saw the lady in the gutter. I tried to reach her immediately, holding her hand, and others joined me, but the current was too strong.”

Gerhard added that multiple rescuers, numbering about six, were involved in the attempt, but the floodwaters’ strength made it impossible to save her.

“At one point, we had to prioritize our own safety to avoid being dragged by the water. Eventually, she slipped from our grip, and then she was gone,” he said.
