Hopeson Yaovi Adorye has been elected to the Board of Directors of the World Taxpayers Association (WTA) at the Association’s conference in Kraków, Poland.
The election gives Adorye a new international platform to contribute to discussions on taxpayer rights, responsible taxation, transparency, accountability and prudent management of public resources.
In his first remarks following the election, Adorye expressed appreciation to members and leadership of the World Taxpayers Association for the confidence reposed in him.
He said the new responsibility comes with an obligation to strengthen the voice of taxpayers and promote greater accountability in the management of public finances.
“I am deeply honoured by this confidence and conscious of the responsibility that comes with it. Taxpayers are at the heart of every economy, and they deserve fairness, transparency, accountability and value for the taxes they pay,” he said.
Adorye argued that taxation should not be viewed merely as a mechanism for raising revenue but as an important component of the social contract between citizens and the state.
According to him, governments have a responsibility to ensure that taxes are collected fairly and that public resources are efficiently utilised to provide essential services, including quality healthcare, education, infrastructure and security.
Bringing African perspective to global tax debate
The new appointment is also expected to provide an opportunity for African experiences and perspectives to feature more prominently in international discussions on taxation, public expenditure and economic development.
Adorye said he intends to use his position to contribute to initiatives aimed at promoting fiscal accountability, taxpayer education, good governance and stronger citizen participation in public financial management.
His international leadership experience includes serving as Global Board Chairman of the International Youth Network for UN Security Council Resolution 2250, an organisation associated with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
The World Taxpayers Association conference in Kraków brought together taxpayer advocates and organisations focused on advancing taxpayer interests and promoting responsible taxation globally.
