Tension has gripped Kukurantumi, a town in the Abuakwa North Municipality of the Eastern Region, after angry youth set the local police station ablaze in protest against the death of a man reportedly held in police custody.
According to residents, the suspect, whose identity is yet to be made public, was arrested by police officers under circumstances that remain unclear.
Reports suggest that he died while still in detention, a development that sparked outrage and suspicion among locals who believe foul play may have been involved.
Eyewitnesses told reporters that news of the suspect’s death spread quickly across Kukurantumi on Sunday, prompting an angry crowd to mass up at the police station.
The agitation soon turned violent, with some youth breaking into the premises and setting parts of the facility on fire.
Officers on duty were reportedly forced to flee the scene for their own safety.
