Mahama Directs GH¢300m Allocation For 250 Police Apartments In 2027 Budget To Ease Barracks Congestion

President John Dramani Mahama has directed Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson to make provision for GH¢300 million in the 2027 national budget to construct 250 new apartments for personnel of the Ghana Police Service, as part of efforts to address congestion in police barracks and improve officers’ living conditions.

The proposed housing investment is among a series of welfare and operational interventions announced by the President to strengthen the Ghana Police Service and improve the conditions under which officers carry out their duties.

President Mahama made the announcement on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, during the commissioning of an ultramodern 85-bed ward complex at the Ghana Police Hospital.

Addressing the gathering, the President said the planned accommodation project was intended to ease pressure on existing police barracks, where overcrowding has been identified as a concern affecting the living conditions of personnel.

“I’ve requested the Minister of Finance to provide GH¢300 million in the 2027 budget to construct 250 new apartments for the police to ease congestion in some of your barracks,” he said.

The proposed allocation would be included in the 2027 budget, although the announcement does not in itself mean that the funds have already been approved or released. The project will depend on the budgetary process and subsequent implementation arrangements.

The initiative signals the government’s intention to make accommodation and personnel welfare part of its broader efforts to strengthen the police service. Adequate housing is an important consideration for officers who work demanding schedules and are expected to respond to security emergencies across the country.

Beyond the housing programme, President Mahama announced additional measures aimed at improving the operational capacity and safety of police personnel.

He said a second batch of 40 armoured vehicles was expected to be delivered to the service in the coming weeks. The expected delivery follows the handover of 50 armoured vehicles to the Ghana Police Service in December 2025.

The President also disclosed that the government was procuring additional body armour to improve the protection of officers deployed on operational duties.

The planned supply of vehicles and protective equipment is intended to strengthen the service’s ability to respond to security threats while reducing the risks faced by personnel during operations.

The announcements were made alongside the commissioning of the new 85-bed ward complex at the Ghana Police Hospital, which represents another component of the government’s stated efforts to improve healthcare infrastructure for police personnel and other patients who rely on the facility.

Taken together, the proposed accommodation investment, additional armoured vehicles, body armour and hospital expansion form part of a broader package of interventions focused on police welfare, operational readiness and personnel safety.

If implemented as announced, the construction of 250 apartments would provide additional housing capacity for the service. However, details concerning the project locations, construction timetable and allocation of the apartments were not provided in the announcement.

The government’s next steps will include translating the proposed allocation into the budgetary and implementation processes required to deliver the housing project.
