A 25-year-old man from Edwenase in the Ashanti Region, Nicholas Apotei, has tragically ended his life following a recent breakup that left him emotionally shattered.
The incident, which has stunned the local community, highlights the growing mental health struggles among Ghana’s youth, particularly in dealing with emotional distress.
According to preliminary investigations by the police, Nicholas had been in a relationship with a young woman identified only as Perpetual, who resides in Bekwai.
The two had reportedly been dating until about a week ago when Perpetual decided to end the relationship.
Sources close to the deceased suggest that Nicholas was deeply in love and took the breakup extremely hard.
Despite several attempts to rekindle the relationship, Perpetual remained firm in her decision to part ways.
Witnesses and friends revealed that Nicholas became visibly distressed after the separation, often expressing hopelessness and making alarming statements about ending his life.
His threats sadly materialized on a quiet day in his Edwenase residence, where Nicholas was discovered dead in his kitchen.
According to the police, he used a sponge to hang himself from a ceiling fan. Disturbingly, his iPhone 16 Pro Max was found placed on a nearby cabinet, facing him—possibly to record a message or to serve as a final connection to the world he was leaving behind.
Police have since invited Perpetual to assist with ongoing investigations, though authorities have emphasized that she is not considered a suspect in the case.
Nicholas’s tragic death serves as a grim reminder of the consequences of untreated emotional distress and the importance of accessible mental health resources.
The police have assured the public that investigations will continue to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
Meanwhile, the community mourns the loss of a young life that ended far too soon.
