The Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, is expected to appear before a weekend court today as the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) continues investigations into allegations involving financial transactions linked to SIC Savings and Loans.
The anticipated court appearance follows a day of conflicting reports over the MP’s bail status, with reports circulating that he had been granted GH¢50 million bail, while EOCO subsequently issued an official clarification denying that it had granted him such bail.
In a news release dated October 2, 2026, issued under the heading “Suspect Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah: Update on Investigative Proceedings,” EOCO said the Manhyia South MP remained engaged with investigators following his voluntary surrender on October 1.
The statement said: “Following the voluntary surrender of Nana Baffour Agyei Awuah on October 1, 2026 at 10 am yesterday, the Office wishes to inform the general public that the Office continues with the various and necessary investigative, procedural and operational processes.”
EOCO further stated that Baffour Awuah was cooperating with the investigative process and that, taking into account the constitutional timeframes and procedural requirements governing bail, it was working with the Office of the Attorney-General to bring him before a weekend court.
The anti-graft agency also directly addressed the GH¢50 million bail reports, urging the public to disregard them.
“The Office also wishes to urge the public to disregard media reports that the Office has granted the Suspect a GHC50 million bail,” the statement said.
The clarification followed reports from some media outlets that the MP had been granted GH¢50 million bail with three sureties.
The conflicting reports have therefore made the court proceedings today particularly significant, as the court is expected to clarify the MP’s immediate legal status and any conditions applicable to his continued release or detention.
How The Investigation Began
Baffour Awuah’s appearance before EOCO follows a series of developments dating back several months.
EOCO obtained an arrest warrant from the High Court after telling the court that previous efforts to secure the MP’s voluntary attendance for questioning had not succeeded. The warrant paved the way for his eventual surrender to the agency on Thursday, October 1.
The MP arrived at EOCO’s premises at about 10 a.m., accompanied by his lawyers and some parliamentary colleagues, and presented himself to investigators.
EOCO subsequently placed him under arrest while the investigative process continued. The agency said he was cooperating with investigators and that it would pursue all relevant lines of inquiry in accordance with due process.
The investigations concern allegations including criminal conspiracy, financial loss to SIC Savings and Loans, money laundering, tax-related offences and other matters, according to EOCO.
The case is also connected to financial transactions involving SIC Life Savings and Loans and the MP’s former law firm, Sarkodie, Baffour Awuah and Partners.
According to reports, the former law firm had been engaged by SIC Life Savings and Loans to recover funds involving Equity Savings and Loans. The amount initially involved was reported to be about GH¢3.5 million, which subsequently increased to approximately GH¢14 million with accrued interest before a settlement was reached.
Baffour Awuah has disputed aspects of the allegations and has argued that the investigations should focus on his former law firm rather than him. He has also denied receiving the alleged GH¢2.2 million in legal fees referred to in reports surrounding the investigation.
Searches of office and residence
Following his questioning, EOCO investigators also conducted searches at locations connected to the MP.The searches formed part of the investigative process authorised by the High Court, with EOCO examining material that could assist investigators in establishing the circumstances surrounding the transactions under investigation.
The development came after an earlier attempt by EOCO officials to arrest the MP at the premises of the Accra High Court resulted in a confrontation, bringing the case into the public spotlight.
Baffour Awuah subsequently chose to surrender himself to EOCO after the arrest warrant was issued.
