A devastating incident in the Western Region has left a 42-year-old woman and three children dead after they drowned in an abandoned illegal mining pit filled with water.
The victims have been identified with her two biological sons, and her nephew.
According to eyewitness reports, the children often visited the area to collect dried cocoa branches for firewood.
On the day of the tragedy, they had gathered their firewood and placed it by the roadside before running to the abandoned pit to swim.
Their mother, realizing that the children were struggling in the water, rushed to their aid.
In a heartbreaking turn, she became trapped in the pit alongside them, leading to all four drowning.
Emergency responders recovered the bodies, which have since been deposited at the Asankragwa Hospital pending autopsy.
