The Mpox cases have been steadily increasing, with the latest update indicating a significant rise in infections.
According to recent reports, 21 new cases were confirmed, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 467 as of September 4, 2025.
Unfortunately, the country’s health authorities have recorded one death, and there are currently no hospital admissions.
Understanding Mpox
Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, is a viral disease that spreads mainly through close contact with an infected person or contaminated materials. Common symptoms include:
– Fever
– Headache
– Rash
– Swollen lymph nodes
– Muscle pain
Public Health Response
The Ghana Health Service (GHS) is working diligently to contain the outbreak.
Measures include:
– Enhanced Surveillance: Health officials are closely monitoring the situation across all 16 regions through a nationwide surveillance system.
– Contact Tracing: Regional health directorates have activated emergency response protocols, including contact tracing, to identify and manage potential cases.
– Public Education: The GHS is intensifying public education campaigns to raise awareness about Mpox symptoms, prevention strategies, and the importance of early reporting.
Prevention And Control
To prevent the spread of Mpox, individuals are advised to:
– Practice Good Hygiene: Regular handwashing with soap and water is crucial.
– Avoid Close Contact: Minimize contact with individuals showing symptoms.
– Report Symptoms Early: Seek medical care immediately if symptoms appear.
The GHS assures the public of its preparedness to manage the situation and prevent a larger outbreak.
