The Central North Regional Police Command has taken decisive action following the violent mob attack at the Akoti Health Centre in Assin Fosu District, arresting 100 residents of the nearby community of Assin Wurakese in connection with the incident.
The arrests, confirmed on January 23, 2026, come after weeks of intelligence gathering and investigations into the coordinated attack that shook the Central Region and drew nationwide attention.
The attack occurred on January 11, 2026, when a group of individuals stormed the Akoti Health Centre and assaulted a patient who had been brought to the facility for medical care.
The violent act took place in the presence of health workers, patients, and visitors, leading to widespread panic and prompting condemnation from the Central Regional Health Directorate of the Ghana Health Service.
At the time, the Directorate emphasized that health facilities are neutral, protected spaces and called for immediate police action to apprehend the perpetrators.
According to DCOP Abraham Acquaye, Central North Regional Police Commander, the latest arrests followed sustained intelligence operations that indicated the attack was a coordinated mob action involving multiple members of the Assin Wurakese community.
“Our investigation revealed that some residents failed to prevent the crime, others aided and abetted the attackers, while certain persons harboured suspects without reporting them to the police,” he said during a media briefing.
The police deployed approximately 85 personnel to Assin Wurakese to carry out the swoop, which resulted in the identification and arrest of the 100 individuals.
DCOP Acquaye explained that the suspects would undergo a thorough screening process. Those found culpable will be arraigned in court and face prosecution under the full rigours of the law, while those found innocent will be released.
This latest round of arrests follows earlier detentions connected to the case. Among them is Yaw Buabeng, who was both a victim of a prior mob attack and a suspect in a related matter, and a community police officer.
Both were arraigned in court and remanded into police custody, with their next hearing scheduled for February 5, 2026.
Another individual, Daniel Ababio, was also apprehended after being identified in a viral video allegedly attacking Yaw Buabeng with a pair of scissors inside the health centre.
