Portuguese FA Suspends Ronaldo After Training Camp Fallout

BY NADIA NTIAMOAH

Cristiano Ronaldo has been provisionally suspended by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) as disciplinary proceedings begin over his reported departure from Portugal’s training camp ahead of their UEFA Nations League fixture against Denmark.

The FPF announced the decision on Saturday, October 10, following a meeting held on Friday, October 9. The matter has been referred to the federation’s Disciplinary Investigation Commission, with proceedings expected to be handled urgently.

The development comes amid reports of tensions between Ronaldo and Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus following the forward’s omission from the starting line-up during the national team’s 2-1 victory over Norway on September 27.

Ronaldo, who plays for Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr, reportedly left the training camp after becoming dissatisfied with the handling of his playing time and the explanation provided by the coach.

According to reports, the former Manchester United and Real Madrid forward believed Jesus had promised him 30 minutes of action during the match against Norway but failed to introduce him from the bench.

Ronaldo also reportedly expressed disappointment that the coach did not adequately explain his omission during a subsequent press conference.

Jesus, however, has denied making any agreement with Ronaldo over the amount of playing time he would receive, leaving the disagreement at the centre of the controversy surrounding the Portuguese captain.

The Portuguese Football Federation’s decision to provisionally suspend Ronaldo signals that the incident has moved beyond a reported disagreement between the player and his coach.

By referring the matter to its Disciplinary Investigation Commission, the federation has initiated a process to examine the circumstances surrounding the forward’s departure from camp.

The FPF has indicated that the proceedings will be handled urgently, although the information provided does not specify the duration of the provisional suspension or the final disciplinary measures Ronaldo could face.

The outcome of the investigation is expected to clarify the circumstances of the incident and determine any further action under the federation’s disciplinary framework.

Following the incident, Ronaldo reportedly apologised to his teammates and supporters while acknowledging that the federation could impose disciplinary measures over his conduct.

The Portugal captain has also indicated his willingness to continue representing his country after serving any suspension that may be imposed.

His response suggests that, despite the controversy, he remains interested in continuing his international career.

Ronaldo has been one of Portugal’s most prominent players for nearly two decades, making the dispute a significant development for the national team as it navigates the current international campaign.
