The Ridge Hospital nurse who was brutally assaulted in a chaotic incident last week has taken her fight for justice to the courts, demanding GHS7 million in compensation from popular social media personality with a link to the governing NDC, Ralph Saint Williams, widely known as “Ralph De Fellow Ghanaian.”
The Incident
The altercation occurred on August 17, 2025, when Ralph Williams stormed the Ridge Hospital Emergency Unit with more than 20 supporters on motorbikes after reportedly sustaining injuries in a road accident.
Eyewitnesses say the group created a scene in the already congested ward, intimidating patients, relatives, and medical staff.
Hospital officials explained that Williams was triaged “green,” meaning his condition was not life-threatening. However, tensions rose when he allegedly refused to follow hospital protocol to register for a patient card.
Instead, he reportedly demanded that nurses use his Ghana Card in breach of procedure.
According to staff accounts, the situation escalated when Williams’ supporters began harassing hospital workers.
In the midst of the commotion, Rejoice Tsotso Bortei, a nurse who had just completed her shift and was washing her hands at the ER entrance, was attacked.
She sustained serious injuries, including a dislocated shoulder, chest trauma, and wounds to her hand and head.
She also lost personal belongings, including her phone and money.
Hospital staff further allege that Williams personally joined in the assault, threatening to “follow staff to their homes and finish one of them.”
The Lawsuit
On August 20, 2025, Bortei, through her lawyers Blagogee, Blacksword & Co., filed a civil action at the High Court in Accra, seeking GHS 5 million in damages for battery and GHS 2 million for defamation.
The defamation charge stems from Williams’ public comments after the incident. In a widely circulated video, he dismissed the nurse’s injuries as fabricated, calling her a “liar” and accusing her of cooking up the story to cover hospital inefficiencies.
Bortei’s legal team argues that these remarks have tarnished her professional image, subjected her to public ridicule, and cast doubt on her credibility as a nurse.
Her demands in court include:
A public apology and retraction of defamatory statements,
A perpetual injunction to restrain Williams from further defamatory remarks,
A 50-meter restraining order against him,
Legal costs and any other relief deemed appropriate by the court.
The High Court has ordered Williams to enter an appearance within eight days or risk a default judgment.
Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has already waded into the matter, directing a newly formed committee investigating the Ridge Hospital assault to submit its report within a week.
He claimed some of the suspects have been arrested , and there hasn’t been any official report from the Police to confirm.
