With the tracking of the origins of social media posts unpalatable to government through their IP addresses now possible and rife some tiktokers were traced, arrested and jailed.
This feature operated by the Signals Bureau was referred to during a presentation by the President when he said those who post offending and scathing posts will be traced through their IP addresses and arrested. The floodgates for such arrests have been flung open in recent times and attracting public opprobrium.
Its threat to free speech has especially taken a place on the front burners of public discourse.
It is a prevailing reality which has reintroduced a culture of silence once more.
We find it amazing therefore that the Deputy Attorney General Dr. Srem Sai would claim that he has been threatened over the Wontumi case when a technical facility exists to track those behind the threats and arrest them for prosecution.
Skeptics are wondering why the Deputy AG has put out the threat now concluding that it is a means towards enhancing the chances of denying the jailed politician’s bail application pending appeal issue before the court.
The now applicable term of setting or subterfuge in local politics is being played out to present the politician as a flight risk having been described as such by the Attorney General himself earlier.
Governance is a serious business of statecraft and so those who find themselves taking part in this process must exhibit a high sense of service devoid of manouvres which give cause for public queries.
It is unfortunate that otherwise fine gentlemen would be driven to such lows in their relationship with the public who by their terms of reference they are expected to serve sincerely.
The intelligence of Ghanaians must be respected, not insulted by such cheap and unconvincing settings intended to feed into a situation where the political prisoner will suffer unduly.
The Deputy Attorney General must have confidence in the relevant security service of state to be able to discharge their duties in stopping Wontumi from fleeing the country while on bail.
With the power of state at their disposal the Deputy Attorney General and his boss the Attorney General should use this with the fear of God as their guide and beacon. Throwing dust into the eyes of Ghanaians through such unprovable disclosures of non-existing threats can only be nauseating and irritating.
Here is demanding on behalf of the people of this country proof that there is any such threat as announced by Dr. Sai.
Did the threat come via through a mobile phone? If affirmative he should tell us and inform the Signals Bureau to track down the source of the threat failing which disclosure and action he should just abort the project.
