A 36-year-old teacher at Sowutuom in Accra, Albert Avinyoh Wilson, finds himself in a web of financial and legal troubles after lending a staggering GH¢105,000 to a banker at Consolidated Bank Ghana (CBG).
Wilson, who takes home only GH¢700 as a monthly salary, said he never imagined that an act of kindness toward one of his students would drag him into financial ruin.
How It All Began
According to Albert, one of his students frequently appeared troubled at school, prompting him to offer financial assistance.
Out of gratitude, the student informed her mother, a banker, about the teacher’s support.
The banker, who claimed to be in financial distress, then contacted Albert through her daughter, asking for financial help.
Albert, who had saved GH¢5,000 for his rent, withdrew the money and added contributions from friends who had taken quick loans.
Together, he raised GH¢10,000 for the woman, who assured him that she would invest it in her import and export business and repay with interest within a year.
Pressure To Raise More Funds
Soon after, the banker demanded an additional GH¢90,000, claiming she urgently needed the funds.
She attempted to convince Albert of her sincerity by giving him a document to land she allegedly owned at Amasaman.
Although Albert initially lacked the money, he resorted to selling a 2019 Nissan Sentra car valued at GH¢170,000, which belonged to his girlfriend’s brother living abroad.
The vehicle had been entrusted to him because he once helped the owner.
Albert said the banker even provided a buyer for the car, who purchased it for GH¢90,000—a sum he immediately handed over to her.
In total, the banker was expected to repay over GH¢200,000, including interest.
Broken Promises And Betrayal
When repayment was due, the banker allegedly told Albert that her goods had been impounded at the port, making it impossible to honor her promise.
She later retrieved the land documents from him and blocked his calls.
Desperate, Albert traced her to her former office at Kaneshie, where he learned she had been transferred to CBG’s head office.
But when he confronted her there, she reportedly threatened to have him arrested if he returned.
Mounting Pressure And Arrest
With his landlord threatening eviction, his friends demanding repayment of their loans, and his girlfriend’s brother asking for his car, Albert admitted he became desperate.
At one point, he pestered the banker at her office and even threw water on her. His actions led to his arrest, turning the case against him instead of the banker.
Failed Settlement Agreement
Albert told Crime Check TV GH that his family later intervened, leading to an agreement where the banker promised to pay him GH¢5,000 monthly until the debt was cleared.
However, she has allegedly defaulted, paying inconsistent amounts.
So far, Albert has only received GH¢33,000, far short of the amount owed.
A Teacher On the Brink
The fallout has left Albert in a precarious situation. He now faces:
The threat of arrest by his girlfriend’s brother if he cannot replace the GH¢170,000 car.
The risk of eviction by his landlord for unpaid rent. Angry friends who are demanding repayment of loans they took on his behalf.
