The Ghana Football Association (GFA) will officially launch the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League (GPL) season tomorrow, Friday, September 12, at the Accra Sports Stadium, with President John Dramani Mahama expected to grace the occasion as Special Guest of Honour.
The event, scheduled for 5:00 p.m., is not just a curtain-raiser for the top-flight football but also a showcase of the renewed partnership between football and national leadership.
In a symbolic gesture of state support for sports development, President Mahama will join GFA officials, club representatives, and fans to usher in a season that promises excitement, competitiveness, and new beginnings.
Entertainment Meets Football
To give the launch an extra touch of spectacle, award-winning reggae-dancehall artiste Stonebwoy will perform live at the stadium.
The GFA believes blending football with entertainment will attract more fan engagement and strengthen the league’s visibility.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), the football governing body noted: “The 2025/26 Ghana Premier League season is officially launching! Join us at the Accra Sports Stadium on September 12, 2025, at 5 PM. We’ll be joined by His Excellency, President John Dramani Mahama, with a live performance by Stonebwoy. Get ready for an exciting season of Ghanaian football.”
First Match of the Season
Following the official launch, the opening fixture of the season will kick off at 7:00 p.m. at the same venue, with Hearts of Oak hosting newly promoted Hohoe United FC.
This encounter has already generated buzz, with Hohoe United eager to prove themselves against one of Ghana’s most decorated clubs in their maiden top-flight campaign.
The rest of the Week One fixtures will be spread across the weekend, with two matches on Saturday and six on Sunday, ensuring football fans across the country are treated to a full slate of action.
Context and Expectations
The GPL has faced its share of challenges in recent years, including declining matchday attendances, funding difficulties, and questions over officiating integrity.
However, the GFA has been making efforts to rebrand the league, secure better sponsorship deals, and improve the overall fan experience.
Last season saw Medeama SC clinch the title after a dramatic run-in, while giants such as Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko underperformed, prompting renewed calls for investment in player development and club management.
With Hohoe United making their debut in the league, fans are anticipating fresh rivalries and storylines.
