Security agencies restore calm as investigations begin into violent disturbances during Friday prayers at Ho Zongo central mosque.

At least 10 people sustained gunshot injuries while 15 others were arrested following a violent disturbances that erupted at the Ho Zongo community in the Volta Region on Friday morning, disrupting Islamic prayers and throwing the area into panic.

The incident occurred in the early hours of the day when unidentified masked men allegedly stormed the central mosque in the Zongo enclave and demanded access to the facility while worshippers were preparing for or already engaged in Friday prayers.

The sudden intrusion sparked confusion and fear among residents, culminating in sporadic gunfire that left several people injured.

According to security sources, the disturbances prompted the immediate deployment of both police and military personnel to the area to contain the situation and prevent further escalation.

Calm was later restored after the joint security team secured the enclave and arrested 15 suspects believed to be connected to the incident.

Medical authorities at the Ho Teaching Hospital confirmed that 10 victims were rushed to the facility with gunshot-related injuries.

Dr. Edward Agyekum, Head of the Accident and Emergency Unit, disclosed that most of the victims sustained pellet wounds, largely affecting the legs and thighs.

He noted that while the majority of the patients were in stable condition, one individual required closer medical monitoring after a pellet reportedly travelled from the thigh to the lower abdomen.

“The rest of the patients are responding well to treatment and are not in critical condition.

Most of them are expected to be discharged soon,” Dr. Agyekum assured.

Although police have yet to officially state the motive behind the shooting, preliminary information suggests the violence may be linked to internal tensions and leadership disputes within the Muslim community in Ho.

Residents allege that the attackers attempted to forcibly take control of the mosque, an action that triggered resistance and led to the ensuing chaos.
