GWL Major Pipeline Suffers Burst Disrupting Water Supplies To Eastern Accra, Tema

By Grace Zigah

Large sections of eastern Accra and the entire Tema Metropolis have been hit by widespread water supply disruptions following a major burst on a 42-inch transmission pipeline operated by Ghana Water Limited (GWL).

The incident, which occurred on Monday, January 19, 2026, has interrupted the flow of treated water to several densely populated residential and commercial communities.

According to Ghana Water Limited, the affected pipeline is one of the critical transmission mains responsible for conveying bulk water to eastern Accra and its adjoining municipalities.

The rupture has significantly reduced water production and distribution along the corridor, leaving households, businesses, and public institutions without regular supply.

GWL explained that engineers detected the fault on Monday and immediately mobilised technical teams to the site.

Repair works have since been ongoing around the clock, with officials noting that the size of the 42-inch transmission main and the technical complexity involved require meticulous handling to guarantee safety, durability, and long-term efficiency once the system is restored.

Communities Affected

The current interruption is impacting customers across the entire Tema Metropolis and several parts of Accra, including Ashaiman, Gbetsele, Akatamanso, Klagon, Lashibi, Baatsonaa, Spintex, parts of East Legon, Nungua, Teshie, and surrounding communities.

Residents in these areas have been advised to manage existing water reserves prudently while repair works continue.

Background To Recurrent Disruptions

The latest disruption adds to a series of challenges Ghana Water Limited has faced in maintaining aging transmission infrastructure in parts of Greater Accra.

Over the years, increased urbanisation, population growth, and rising water demand have placed immense pressure on major pipelines, some of which were laid decades ago.

Burst transmission lines, particularly large-diameter mains, often result in extensive supply cuts because of their central role in distributing water to multiple districts simultaneously.

Support For Essential Services

In response to concerns about the impact on critical public services, Ghana Water Limited has urged essential service providers—particularly hospitals and schools—to contact the company for emergency support.

GWL has made available multiple communication channels, including a toll-free line (0800 40000 on Telecel lines), phone lines, WhatsApp contacts, and its official social media platforms to coordinate assistance during the disruption.

Assurance of Restoration

GWL has reassured the public that restoring normal water supply remains a top priority. The company says water production and distribution will resume immediately after repairs are completed.

Management expressed regret over the inconvenience caused and appealed to affected customers for patience and understanding as engineers work to resolve the situation.
