Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has publicly expressed confidence in Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Vice President describing him as highly competent and well-prepared to lead the nation.

Speaking shortly after the conclusion of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primary, Akufo-Addo commended Dr. Bawumia’s intellectual depth, experience in governance, and demonstrated leadership skills, noting that these qualities position him to effectively tackle the economic and political challenges.

“Bawumia has the competency to lead Ghana,” the former president affirmed, emphasizing the former vice president’s readiness for national leadership.

Dr. Bawumia secured a decisive victory in the NPP primary, polling 110,643 votes—representing 56.48 percent of the total ballots cast—thereby emerging as the party’s flagbearer for the 2028 general election.

His triumph marks the culmination of a rigorous nationwide campaign that engaged delegates across all regions, including strong showings in Greater Accra, Ashanti, Eastern, Western, Ahafo, Bono, Bono East and Oti regions.

Akufo-Addo further extended his congratulations to all aspirants who participated in the contest, including high-profile figures such as Kennedy Ohene Agyapong and Dr. Bryan Acheampong, commending the competitive and disciplined manner in which the race was conducted.

He called on party members and supporters to unite behind Dr. Bawumia, underscoring the critical importance of cohesion as the NPP prepares for the next general elections.

The former president also highlighted Dr. Bawumia’s tenure as vice president, citing his hands-on involvement in national economic management, digitalization initiatives, and fiscal policy reforms.

Akufo-Addo argued that these experiences have equipped Bawumia with the strategic insight necessary to continue strengthening Ghana’s governance structures and economic resilience.

Political analysts have noted that Akufo-Addo’s endorsement is significant, as it signals continuity within the NPP leadership and reinforces the party’s focus on experienced, capable candidates to sustain its electoral appeal.
