The Court of Arbitration for Sport has officially confirmed receipt of an appeal from the Senegalese Football Federation challenging the controversial decision to strip Senegal of their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title.
The appeal, registered on March 25, 2026, sets in motion what is expected to be a high-stakes legal battle with far-reaching implications for African football governance and tournament integrity.
At the heart of the dispute is the earlier ruling by the Confederation of African Football, which overturned Senegal’s 1-0 victory in the AFCON final and awarded the title to Morocco following disciplinary findings.
Reversal Of CAF Decision
In its submission, the Senegalese FA argues that CAF’s decision to revoke the title was unjustified and procedurally flawed. The federation is seeking a complete annulment of the ruling and reinstatement as AFCON 2025 champions.
As part of its legal strategy, Senegal has requested that the deadline for submitting its detailed appeal brief be suspended until CAF provides the full written grounds for its decision.
According to the federation, access to the complete reasoning is essential to ensure a fair opportunity to prepare its case.
CAS Panel to Determine Outcome
CAS will now appoint an arbitral panel tasked with independently reviewing the matter. The panel will examine submissions from all parties involved, including CAF and representatives of Morocco’s football authorities, before determining the merits of the appeal.
Once constituted, the panel will establish a procedural calendar outlining timelines for written submissions, possible hearings, and any mediation efforts that may arise during the process.
CAS Director General Matthieu Reeb underscored the institution’s readiness to handle the case, noting that the tribunal is equipped with experienced and independent arbitrators capable of resolving complex international sports disputes.
He also assured stakeholders that while efforts would be made to expedite proceedings, due process and fairness would remain paramount.
Continental Attention And Possible Precedent
The appeal has already generated intense interest across the African football landscape, with fans, analysts, and administrators closely monitoring developments.
The case is widely viewed as a defining moment that could shape how disciplinary actions and match-related disputes are handled in future continental competitions.
A successful appeal by Senegal would mark a dramatic reversal of CAF’s decision and restore the West African nation as champions.
On the other hand, if CAS upholds the ruling, it would cement Morocco’s status as titleholders and reinforce CAF’s authority in enforcing its regulations.
