The Black Stars will take on the Austria national football team on Friday in Vienna, in what is shaping up to be a crucial but challenging preparatory fixture ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The friendly comes at a time when the technical team, led by Otto Addo, is grappling with limited preparation time, injuries, and late player arrivals—factors that have significantly influenced both training intensity and squad decisions.
Limited Training Time
The compressed schedule has forced the technical team to prioritise tactical organisation and team cohesion over physical conditioning, as players are quickly integrated into the system ahead of the game.
The Black Stars’ preparations have also been disrupted by injuries to key attacking players, including Iñaki Williams and Brandon Thomas-Asante, both of whom have been ruled out of the fixture.
In response, Coach Otto Addo opted against making multiple late additions to the squad, choosing instead to call up only one replacement—Ransford-Yeboah Königsdörffer.
The Hamburg forward arrived in Vienna late on Monday and joined training the following day, with early reports from camp describing him as energetic and sharp in his first session with the team.
The decision to limit new inclusions reflects a strategic choice to maintain cohesion within the squad rather than introduce several players who would have little time to adapt to the team’s tactical setup.
Austria Test Part Of Broader World Cup Build-Up
The match against Austria is the first of two high-profile friendlies scheduled during the international window. Ghana will travel to Stuttgart shortly after to face the Germany national football team on March 30.
Both games are part of a structured preparation plan aimed at testing the team against strong European opposition ahead of the World Cup.
With Ghana set to compete in a difficult Group L alongside the England, Croatia, and Panama national football teams, the importance of these preparatory fixtures cannot be overstated.
