The youth football revival faces an early and formidable challenge after the Confederation of African Football placed the Black Starlets in a daunting Group D for the 2026 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in Morocco.

The draw, conducted in Cairo, has paired Ghana with continental heavyweights Senegal, South Africa, and Algeria—a lineup widely described as the tournament’s “Group of Death.”

For the Black Starlets, this marks a long-awaited return to the competition, having last featured in the tournament in 2017.

Their absence from recent editions has raised concerns about the country’s youth development pipeline, making this year’s participation both a comeback and a test of progress.

Group D promises intense competition from the outset. Senegal arrives with a strong pedigree in youth football, consistently producing technically gifted and physically dominant teams.

South Africa brings tactical discipline and structure, while Algeria’s blend of technical quality and resilience adds further complexity to the group.

The tournament, scheduled to run from May 13 to June 2 in Morocco, doubles as a qualifying platform for the FIFA U-17 World Cup.

Only the top two teams from each group are guaranteed progression to the knockout stage and automatic qualification for the global competition.

Third-placed teams will have a final opportunity through playoff matches to secure the remaining World Cup slots.
