AFRIWOCC Rebrands To AFRYWOCC, Signaling Strategic Shift Toward Youth-Driven Climate Solutions In Africa

By Daniel Bampoe

A leading continental climate advocacy platform, formerly known as the Africa Women and Children Conference (AFRIWOCC), has officially transitioned into the African Women and Youth Climate Centre (AFRYWOCC), marking a significant institutional shift aimed at deepening inclusive climate action across Africa.

The rebranding, which takes immediate effect, reflects what the organization describes as a natural evolution of its mission and scope, following years of engagement in climate advocacy, policy dialogue, and community empowerment initiatives.

The move is also seen as a response to the increasing urgency of climate challenges confronting the continent and the need to reposition for more practical, impact-driven interventions.

Since its establishment, AFRIWOCC has functioned as a convening platform, bringing together stakeholders to deliberate on climate-related issues affecting vulnerable groups, particularly women and children.

Through conferences, partnerships, and advocacy efforts, the organization contributed to elevating marginalized voices within climate discourse while fostering collaboration among policymakers, civil society actors, and grassroots communities.

Over time, its work helped shape conversations around climate vulnerability and resilience, particularly in regions where women and children disproportionately bear the brunt of environmental degradation.

The platform also played a role in building networks and empowering individuals who have traditionally been excluded from climate decision-making processes.

However, the organization acknowledges that the intensifying climate crisis now demands a more action-oriented approach.

The transition to AFRYWOCC is therefore positioned as a strategic pivot toward implementing tangible solutions, with a stronger emphasis on innovation, sustainability, and long-term impact.

Under its new identity, AFRYWOCC is expanding its operational focus to include climate education, clean energy initiatives, and the promotion of women- and youth-led climate enterprises.

This shift underscores a deliberate effort to transform from a dialogue-driven platform into a solutions hub that directly addresses community-level climate challenges.

Central to this transformation is the recognition of women and young people as key agents of change. Despite their growing role in climate innovation and grassroots activism across Africa, these groups continue to face limited representation in policy formulation and resource allocation spaces.

AFRYWOCC’s renewed mandate seeks to bridge this gap by positioning them at the forefront of climate leadership and decision-making.

The organization maintains that Africa’s response to climate change must be rooted in local realities while being driven by those most affected. It argues that empowering women and youth is critical to building resilience and achieving sustainable development outcomes across the continent.

While the name and strategic direction have evolved, AFRYWOCC insists that its foundational values remain unchanged.

These include a commitment to empowerment, inclusivity, collaboration, and sustainability—principles that have guided its work since inception.

With this transition, AFRYWOCC is also seeking to strengthen partnerships with governments, development agencies, private sector actors, and local communities. The goal is to create a coordinated ecosystem that supports innovation, scales solutions, and advances climate resilience efforts across Africa.

The organization has expressed optimism about the future, emphasizing its readiness to work with stakeholders at all levels to ensure that women and young people are not only included in climate conversations but are actively leading the continent’s response to environmental challenges.

AFRYWOCC’s Secretariat has encouraged interested partners and stakeholders to engage with the organization as it embarks on this new phase of its work.
