15 Killed, 25 Injured In Deadly Volta Highway Crash

A devastating road accident at Peki-Tsame in the Volta Region has claimed the lives of 15 people and left 25 others injured, adding to growing concerns about the rising number of fatal crashes on the highways.

The tragic collision occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, June 2, 2026, near the premises of Peki Senior High School, when a passenger bus and a container truck crashed head-on, leaving a scene of destruction and loss.

Emergency responders from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) rushed to the scene after distress calls reported multiple casualties trapped inside the mangled vehicles.

According to preliminary information released by the Fire Service, the accident involved a Mercedes-Benz container truck with registration number WR 1553-C, which was travelling from Nkwanta towards Accra, and a Mercedes-Benz passenger bus with registration number GR 3215-E travelling from Battor in the Volta Region to Kabiti in the Oti Region.

A total of 40 passengers were involved in the collision, comprising 21 men, 15 women, and four children.

The impact of the crash was so severe that several occupants became trapped in the wreckage, prompting an extensive rescue operation by firefighters from the Peki Fire Station.

Rescue personnel worked tirelessly to extricate victims from the twisted remains of the vehicles before transporting the injured to nearby medical facilities for treatment.

The Ghana National Fire Service disclosed that 25 injured persons, including 23 adults and two children, were rescued and conveyed to the Peki Government Hospital for emergency medical attention.

Despite the rescue efforts, 15 victims succumbed to their injuries. The deceased included nine men and six women.

The bodies were subsequently handed over to the Ghana Police Service and transported to the mortuary at the Peki Government Hospital pending identification and preservation.

Authorities have not yet established the exact cause of the collision.
