A controversial incident at Nkwatia Government Hospital has triggered public concern and renewed scrutiny over hospital billing practices, after a family claimed they were misled into paying outstanding medical bills under false pretences.

According to accounts from relatives, the incident began when the family, reportedly struggling or reluctant to settle accumulated medical bills for a sick relative, was contacted by hospital staff and informed that the patient had died while receiving treatment.

The shocking news prompted an immediate response from the family, who rushed to the facility in distress.

Upon arrival, the family was allegedly told that certain administrative and financial obligations needed to be cleared before they could access the body.

In their state of grief, the relatives are said to have quickly mobilised funds and settled all outstanding bills to proceed with arrangements and view the deceased.

However, in a dramatic twist that has since sparked outrage, the family claims they were led not to a morgue but back to the ward, where they found their relative alive—reportedly seated on a hospital bed and drinking a beverage.

The unexpected discovery left the family shocked and angered, raising serious questions about the conduct of hospital personnel.

While hospital authorities are yet to officially respond to the allegations, the incident has ignited debate about ethical standards in healthcare delivery, particularly regarding how medical facilities handle billing and communication with patients’ families.
