Carlos Ahenkorah Targets NPP National Treasurer Position

By Nadia Ntiamoah

Former Member of Parliament for Tema West, Carlos Kingsley Ahenkorah, has officially declared his intention to contest for the position of National Treasurer of the New Patriotic Party in the party’s upcoming national executive election.

In a statement dated May 13, 2026, the former lawmaker said his decision followed extensive consultations with grassroots supporters, constituency and regional executives, party elders, and key stakeholders across the country.

According to him, the New Patriotic Party is at a critical stage of rebuilding and repositioning itself for political victory in the 2028 general elections, stressing that strong financial management and accountability would be crucial to the party’s future success.

Ahenkorah noted that the role of National Treasurer has become increasingly important as the party seeks to strengthen its internal structures, rebuild trust among members, and improve grassroots mobilisation following recent political challenges.

The former Tema West MP and deputy Trade Minister described the NPP as a political tradition built on discipline, accountability, and results, insisting that the party requires a treasury system that is transparent, efficient, and capable of supporting party activities from the national level down to polling station operations.

Outlining his vision, Ahenkorah pledged to ensure that every cedi received and spent by the party would be properly accounted for through regular financial reporting to the National Steering Committee and party delegates.

He also promised to improve the timely disbursement of resources to constituencies and polling station executives to strengthen mobilisation, constituency operations, and election-day activities.

According to him, the party must expand its fundraising strategy beyond its traditional donor base by embracing digital fundraising platforms, encouraging contributions from the Ghanaian diaspora, and attracting small individual contributors while ensuring prudent financial management.

Carlos Ahenkorah stated that his experience in both government and Parliament has adequately prepared him for the position.

He served as Deputy Minister for Trade and Industry under the Akufo-Addo administration and represented Tema West in Parliament, where he was involved in public financial oversight, project supervision, and engagement with stakeholders in both the public and private sectors.

Within the Tema West Constituency, he said he worked closely with constituency executives to strengthen the party’s financial structures and improve accountability to party members.

The former MP stressed that he was not coming into the race with unrealistic promises but rather with a commitment to discipline, openness, and efficient financial administration that would benefit every level of the party structure.

“I am not promising miracles. I am promising discipline, openness, and a treasury that works for every polling station agent, constituency chairman, and volunteer who sacrifices for the elephant,” he stated.

As part of his proposed reforms, Carlos Ahenkorah pledged to introduce quarterly financial briefings for national and regional executives to improve transparency and confidence in the party’s financial management system.

He further promised to strengthen and expand the party’s existing digitised dues and contributions platform to make financial contributions easier, more transparent, and traceable.

According to him, he would also work closely with the National Chairman and General Secretary to ensure fair and transparent allocation of party funds in support of the NPP’s political activities and preparations toward the 2028 elections.

The declaration adds to growing internal activities within the NPP as the party prepares for a new round of internal elections and leadership restructuring following the 2024 general elections.

The New Patriotic Party, which governed Ghana from 2017 to 2025 under former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has since been working to reorganise its structures and rebuild party cohesion as it strategises for a political comeback in 2028.

Carlos Ahenkorah concluded his statement by appealing to delegates and party faithful to support his bid, stressing that rebuilding trust, strengthening party structures, and presenting a united front would require collective effort and strong leadership.

He expressed confidence that with transparency, discipline, and effective financial management, the NPP would position itself strongly ahead of the next general election.
