Ghana football legend Asamoah Gyan has officially returned to national football duty after being unveiled as an ambassador for the national teams and colts football in a move aimed at boosting support and development across the country’s football structure.
The former Black Stars captain was formally introduced at a ceremony held at the Pelican Hotel in Accra on Wednesday evening, where football administrators, former teammates and key stakeholders gathered to honour one of the greatest football icons.
The event was attended by Kurt Okraku, officials of the Ghana Football Association, as well as several former Black Stars players who shared the stage with the country’s all-time leading scorer.
New Role For Ghana Football Icon
Under his new role, Gyan is expected to spearhead promotional campaigns, fan engagement activities and advocacy programmes aimed at mobilising national support for the senior national team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.
The former Sunderland striker will also represent the Ghana Football Association at official functions while supporting initiatives focused on youth football development and the promotion of Ghana’s various national teams.
The appointment forms part of broader efforts by the GFA to reconnect the national teams with supporters and use former players with strong national appeal to inspire the next generation of footballers.

Emotional Ceremony In Accra
An emotional moment marked the ceremony when organisers played a documentary highlighting some of Gyan’s memorable moments and goals for the Black Stars.
The footage triggered loud cheers from invited guests and supporters as the former striker reflected on a career that established him among Africa’s greatest footballers.
Asamoah Gyan remains the all-time leading scorer with 51 goals for the Black Stars and is widely regarded as one of the country’s most influential football figures.
Ghana World Cup Hero
The former captain represented Ghana at three FIFA World Cups — Germany 2006, South Africa 2010 and Brazil 2014 — becoming one of the most recognisable African footballers of his generation.
He famously scored the first-ever FIFA World Cup goal during the 2006 tournament against the Czech Republic, helping the Black Stars reach the Round of 16 in their debut appearance at the global competition.
Asamoah Gyan also played a central role in the historic run to the quarter-finals of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, the furthest any African team came during that tournament.
Beyond his exploits with the national team, the striker enjoyed a successful club career across Europe, Asia and the Middle East, featuring for clubs including Sunderland in the English Premier League and Al Ain in the United Arab Emirates.
