Ghanaian comedian and actor Funny Face has spoken candidly about his experience at a psychiatric facility, revealing that his time there left him feeling more mentally distressed rather than healed.
Speaking during an interview on Joy Prime, the comedian reflected on the difficult moments he encountered during his admission and explained how he struggled to adapt to the environment around him.
According to Funny Face, life inside the psychiatric facility was emotionally overwhelming, forcing him to adjust his behaviour in order to communicate effectively with other patients.
He explained that many of the patients were more comfortable interacting with people they believed understood their world and experiences.
“You don’t have to make them think they are mad. To earn their trust, you need to act like you understand their world,” he stated.
The comedian disclosed that he often had to behave similarly to some of the patients just to gain their confidence and build relationships with them.
Funny Face noted that while some patients shared emotional stories about their lives before admission, others surprisingly offered moments of wisdom, clarity and advice during conversations.
However, he observed that patients frequently became uncomfortable around anyone they believed was acting “normally,” making social interaction within the facility difficult.
He recounted one particularly memorable incident involving a patient who invited him to eat imaginary fufu despite there being no actual food present.
“One man said, ‘Funny, let’s eat fufu.’ There was no fufu there, just the ground, but he was acting like he was eating. So I tried to fit in and joined him,” he narrated.
According to Funny Face, moments like that eventually affected how the nurses and medical staff viewed him during his stay at the facility.
“The nurses started marking me as mad too,” he added.
The comedian clarified that his actions were never intended to deceive hospital staff or pretend to be mentally unstable, but rather to help him survive socially within the environment and connect with fellow patients.
Funny Face has over the years publicly battled emotional and mental health struggles, with several incidents involving emotional breakdowns, troubling social media videos and legal issues drawing public concern.
At various points, family members, colleagues and fans openly appealed for him to receive professional support and counselling.
The comedian’s latest comments have since generated widespread reactions online, with many social media users sympathising with his experience while others highlighted the importance of improving mental health care and patient treatment in psychiatric facilities.
Known for his energetic comedy style and popular roles in Ghanaian entertainment, Funny Face rose to fame through stand-up comedy, television appearances and comedy skits before later becoming one of Ghana’s most recognised comedians.
Despite his personal struggles in recent years, many fans continue to support him and hope for his full recovery and return to stability within the entertainment industry.
