Veteran Ghanaian actress and celebrated television personality Grace Omaboe, popularly known as Maame Dokono, has offered an unfiltered glimpse into her personal life, revealing the joys and trials of motherhood and love that defined her journey over the past eight decades.

Speaking at the “Convergence of Mothers” event held at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel in Accra on Saturday, May 24, the revered screen legend candidly disclosed that she has six children with three different men—an emotional revelation that captured both the beauty and complexity of her life as a woman and a mother.

The 80-year-old actress, famed for her roles in classic Ghanaian films and her contributions to national television, shared that each of her three marriages bore two children.

Her first children were twins, born during a difficult labour experience that nearly claimed her life.

“In fact, I just don’t want to tell you about what I went through. The labour, I almost died,” she recounted, drawing gasps and admiration from the audience. The trauma of that experience initially made her vow never to have children again. But fate had different plans, as love rekindled her desire for family in subsequent marriages.

“You know, there’s nothing that you cannot do when you are in love,” she reflected.

The “Convergence of Mothers” event, spearheaded by media personality Gloria Akpene Nyarku (MzGee) in collaboration with The Reference Africa, brought together influential women to celebrate the resilience and evolution of womanhood under the theme “Yesterday’s Daughters, Today’s Mothers.” The gathering attracted a host of Ghanaian female celebrities and media personalities, all united in honouring maternal strength.

Maame Dokono’s deeply personal reflections came on the heels of her grand 80th birthday celebration, held on June 10, 2024.

The actress, originally from the Birim North District and born in 1946, was feted with a star-studded event at the Underbridge in East Legon, Accra.

The celebration, planned by her six children, was a moving tribute to a matriarch whose life has inspired generations.

The party was marked by glitz, heartfelt tributes, and a dazzling display of affection from Ghana’s entertainment elite.

In a now-viral video, actress Nana Ama McBrown was seen spraying GH¢100 notes on the birthday celebrant as Maame Dokono cut a towering cake surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and longtime colleagues.

Dressed in a sparkling blue ensemble, she radiated grace and joy as old friends from Ghana’s television and film industry came to honour her legacy.

From her pioneering days in storytelling and drama to her current role as a mentor and national icon, Maame Dokono’s life continues to mirror the challenges and triumphs many Ghanaian women face—navigating love, loss, career, and motherhood.

Her story, told with raw honesty, remains a powerful testament to resilience, love, and the enduring spirit of womanhood
