What was meant to be a memorable day of support for Ghana at the FIFA World Cup 2026 turned into heartbreak for dozens of Black Stars supporters after ticket confusion left them locked outside Lincoln Financial Field during Ghana’s final Group L match against Croatia.
The supporters, many of whom had travelled more than 5,000 miles from Ghana to cheer on the Black Stars in the United States, were unable to enter the stadium despite believing that match tickets had been arranged for them.
According to a report by The Athletic, large groups of Ghanaian supporters gathered outside one of the stadium entrances ahead of Saturday’s encounter, expecting to receive tickets shortly before kick-off.
Instead, they found themselves caught in hours of uncertainty as confusion mounted over who was responsible for distributing the tickets.
The fans had arrived in Philadelphia hoping to witness another important chapter in Ghana’s World Cup journey. Having already secured qualification for the Round of 32 after collecting four points from their opening matches against Panama and England, expectations were high for another memorable occasion despite the Black Stars eventually losing 2-1 to Croatia.
However, for many supporters, the match itself became secondary to the growing frustration unfolding outside the stadium.
Reports indicated that some fans believed a representative of a Ghana supporters’ association was on the way with the tickets, while others claimed the tickets that had allegedly been reserved for organised supporters may have been diverted and resold on the secondary market.
One disappointed supporter told The Athletic she believed tickets intended for Ghanaian fans had instead appeared on resale platforms. However, there was no immediate evidence or official confirmation to substantiate the allegation.
Despite the uncertainty, many supporters refused to give up hope.
As kickoff approached, some gathered around mobile phones to follow the match live, while others remained near the entrance waiting for news that tickets had finally arrived.
The atmosphere outside the stadium gradually became more tense as time passed without any resolution. The situation eventually attracted the attention of law enforcement officers stationed at the venue.
According to The Athletic, police increased their presence around the entrance, first doubling and later tripling the number of officers deployed as a precautionary measure while frustration among the waiting supporters continued to grow.
Although there were isolated moments of tension between a small number of supporters and police officers, the vast majority of the Ghanaian fans remained calm and cooperative throughout the ordeal.
Many simply waited patiently, convinced that the misunderstanding would eventually be resolved and they would still be allowed into the stadium.
Unfortunately, that opportunity never came. Around 30 minutes after the match had kicked off, police officers cleared the entrance area and directed the waiting supporters away from the gates toward nearby parking areas, effectively ending any realistic chance of them watching the game inside the stadium.
The development left many fans devastated after travelling thousands of kilometres and investing significant time and money to support the Black Stars on football’s biggest stage.
The incident overshadowed what had otherwise been a successful group-stage campaign for Ghana.
Carlos Queiroz’s side had already exceeded expectations by qualifying for the Round of 32 after defeating Panama and earning a valuable draw against England before suffering defeat to Croatia in their final group match.
