Communications strategist and Director of Communications for former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia campaign, Dennis Miracles Aboagye (DMA), has officially declared his intention to contest for the position of National Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), promising to build a fearless, proactive and digitally driven communications machinery capable of reconnecting the party with Ghanaians and positioning it for victory in the next general elections.
The announcement was greeted with his arrest his arrest by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
Aboagye was reportedly arrested on Sunday at the Accra International Airport by operatives of EOCO with the assistance of personnel from the Ghana Immigration Service over allegations relating to his tenure as Chief Executive Officer of the Inter-Ministerial Coordinating Committee (IMCC).
Although EOCO is said to be investigating alleged corruption-related offences connected to his previous role, the anti-graft agency had not, at the time of filing this report, publicly disclosed the specific allegations or announced any formal charges against him.
The arrest has generated significant political debate because it reportedly occurred only hours after Aboagye publicly declared his intention to contest for a leadership position within the New Patriotic Party.
According to the NPP, the timing of the arrest raises serious concerns about what it describes as the increasing use of state investigative agencies to target opposition figures.
NPP Condemns Arrest
In a strongly worded statement titled “Release Dennis Miracles Aboagye Now,” the General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, alleged that after his arrest, Aboagye was taken into EOCO custody where his lawyers were initially denied access to him, and his whereabouts were allegedly not disclosed.
The party further claimed that no formal charges had been preferred against him despite his continued detention.
According to the NPP, the development constitutes a violation of his constitutional rights and undermines the rule of law.
The party argued that if EOCO has sufficient evidence of criminal wrongdoing, it should either charge Aboagye and arraign him before a court of competent jurisdiction or release him immediately.
Political Intimidation
The opposition party rejected suggestions that the arrest was a routine law enforcement action, insisting instead that it formed part of a broader pattern of political intimidation against members of the NPP.
“It is not law enforcement. It is intimidation,” the party declared.
The NPP pointed to Aboagye’s recent public criticism of the Mahama administration, particularly his comments on illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, and other governance issues.
According to the party, Aboagye has emerged as one of the government’s most vocal critics, frequently questioning official policies and demanding accountability on matters of national concern.
The party also noted that his arrest came shortly after he announced his decision to contest for a leadership position within the NPP, a sequence of events it believes cannot be ignored.
Aboagye’s announcement comes as the NPP begins preparations to reorganise its national leadership following ongoing constituency executive elections, which have seen several new faces emerge amid growing calls for renewal within the party after its defeat in the 2024 general elections.
The party is expected to elect new regional and national executives in the coming months as part of efforts to rebuild its structures ahead of the 2028 elections.
Declaring his candidacy, Dennis Miracles Aboagye described his decision as a call to service at a crucial moment in the party’s history, arguing that political success begins with winning the battle for public confidence through effective communication.
According to him, the NPP possesses a strong record in government that can be defended, but requires a communications team that is courageous, disciplined and capable of projecting the party’s achievements without fear.
“Today, I offer myself to serve. Our message is strong. Our record is defensible. What we need now is a communications team that does not flinch or surrender,” he stated.
Aboagye stressed that the party must become more deliberate in shaping public discourse instead of constantly reacting to narratives created by its political opponents.
“We cannot allow the opposition or intimidation to define who we are. We must define ourselves, tell our own story with confidence, and ensure Ghanaians hear the truth about our values, our record, and our vision for the future,” he said.
The communications strategist further called on members of the NPP across the country to unite behind a renewed communications agenda built on discipline, innovation, strategic engagement and grassroots mobilisation.
“As we look ahead, let us stand shoulder to shoulder, strengthen our resolve, command the narrative, and work tirelessly to bring the New Patriotic Party back to power,” he urged.
Campaigning under the slogan “Built to Lead. Ready to Win,” Dennis Miracles Aboagye said his vision is to establish a communications structure that is proactive, responsive, grassroots-oriented and digitally focused, while equipping party communicators with modern tools to effectively engage voters across the country.
His campaign is also being driven by the hashtag #CommandTheNarrative, which he says reflects his commitment to inspiring a renewed sense of purpose among party communicators and ensuring the NPP communicates with greater clarity, consistency and conviction as it prepares for the next electoral cycle.
