A VIP Jeoun coach scheduled to travel from Abuakwa in the Atwima Nwabiagya Municipality of the Ashanti region to Accra caught fire on Saturday evening while stationary at the station, with no casualties recorded.
The affected vehicle, bearing registration number GT 6770-18, was reportedly waiting to undertake its scheduled journey to Accra when the fire broke out.
According to management of VIP Jeoun, the incident occurred at about 6:45 p.m., when the conductor, identified as Kwaku Apai, noticed smoke coming from the stationary coach.
The conductor immediately moved to switch off the vehicle’s power supply system in an attempt to prevent the situation from escalating. He subsequently informed the station supervisor, who contacted the Ghana National Fire Service for assistance.
At the time of the incident, the coach had not yet begun boarding passengers. It was scheduled to commence loading and boarding later in the evening, with the trip expected to depart at about 9:30 p.m.
Management said the fact that the coach was still stationary and had no passengers or other occupants on board meant that no casualties were recorded.
Following the incident, a relieving coach was positioned to facilitate the scheduled journey and minimise disruption to passengers who had intended to travel from Abuakwa to Accra.
Meanwhile, the relevant authorities are assisting with efforts to determine the cause of the fire and clear the debris from the affected vehicle.
VIP Jeoun management said it remains committed to providing safe and comfortable transportation to its passengers and will continue to cooperate with the authorities as investigations into the incident proceed.
