The University Hospital, Legon, has suspended its General Outpatient Department (OPD), Specialist Clinics and Pharmacy counselling services following the ongoing industrial action by the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA).
The hospital announced the suspension in a public notice issued on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, indicating that the affected services would cease operations from Thursday, August 13, and remain suspended until further notice.
According to the hospital, the decision has become necessary because of the disruption to administrative operations at public universities arising from the GAUA strike.
The suspension affects routine outpatient consultations, specialist clinic services and pharmacy counselling. However, the hospital has assured the public that its Emergency Department remains operational and will continue to provide care to patients requiring urgent medical attention.
The development means patients who would ordinarily visit the hospital for routine outpatient services or specialist consultations may have to wait until the affected services resume.
The industrial action by GAUA is linked to concerns over the implementation of the association’s conditions of service and other outstanding welfare-related matters affecting university administrators.
GAUA has maintained pressure on the relevant authorities to resolve what it describes as outstanding issues, despite previous engagements aimed at reaching an agreement.
The strike has subsequently affected administrative activities within public universities, with institutions having to adjust aspects of their operations in response to the disruption.
The situation at the University Hospital, Legon, highlights the wider impact of the industrial action beyond university administration, particularly where essential services depend on administrative processes to function effectively.
Meanwhile, Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu is expected to meet representatives of GAUA during the week as efforts intensify to find a resolution to the issues behind the strike.
Until an agreement is reached and the industrial action is called off, the University Hospital, Legon, has indicated that the affected outpatient, specialist and pharmacy counselling services will remain suspended, while emergency services continue.
