Experts Advocate for Consumer Protection Law In Ghana

Five experts are scheduled to lead discussions on the need for a comprehensive consumer protection law in Ghana at a virtual advocacy programme on Friday, November 6, 2026.

The discussion will feature legal practitioners, consumer rights advocates and civil society leaders, who will examine Ghana’s consumer protection framework and the need for stronger legislative interventions.

The programme, scheduled for 3:00 p.m., forms part of the Fair Competition and Consumer Rights Advocacy Series, an initiative by K-APP Law in collaboration with the German development cooperation agency GIZ and other partners.

Among the speakers is Nana Kwasi Asuman-Frimpong, founder and Advisory Council Chairman of the Iustum Centre for Democracy and Governance (ICEDEG Africa LBG).

The inaugural discussion will be held on the theme, “Advocating for a Comprehensive Consumer Protection Law in Ghana.”

The engagement is expected to contribute to ongoing advocacy for a comprehensive legal framework that adequately protects consumers while promoting fair competition and responsible business practices.

Reforms

Other speakers for the programme include Dr Francisca Kusi Appiah, Managing Consultant of K-APP Law; Elvira Dery, Esq., Deputy Chairperson for Strategic Events and Diplomacy (OVP); Appiah Kusi Adomako, West Africa Regional Director of CUTS International; and Joseph Nyindam Nanga, Executive Director of Action Youth for Development-Ghana.

The speakers will bring perspectives from legal practice, governance, consumer advocacy and civil society to discussions on the protection of consumer rights and the role of legislation in promoting fair market practices.

Announcing the initiative in a brief statement, Dr Francisca Kusi Appiah described the programme as the beginning of a sustained campaign to promote consumer protection and competition law reforms in Ghana.

“This marks the beginning of the advocacy series for consumer protection as well as competition law,” she stated.

She explained that subsequent engagements would focus on various sectors of the economy, creating opportunities for professionals, industry stakeholders and consumer advocates to contribute their expertise.

“We will be having regular advocacy series on various sectors. Please actively participate and volunteer yourselves as most of you are involved in one sector or the other,” she urged.

Dr Kusi Appiah also acknowledged the contributions of individuals who supported the initiative and encouraged continued collaboration towards protecting consumers across the country.

The organisers have invited legal practitioners, policymakers, businesses, students, civil society organisations and members of the public interested in consumer rights and competition law to participate in the discussion.
