Bryan Acheampong Rescues Chairman Wontumi From Galamsey Probe, Money Laundering Allegations

After five nights in NIB cells, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has finally been released from the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
His release follows the fulfillment of stringent bail conditions, a breakthrough made possible through the personal intervention of Abetifi MP, Bryan Acheampong.

Chairman Wontumi had been held after failing to meet a GH¢50 million bail requirement with two sureties to be justified.

His detention came in the wake of mounting legal troubles as he faces investigations into a litany of suspected offences, including fraud, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state.

The Deputy Attorney-General, Dr. Justice Srem-Sai, disclosed on social media that Wontumi is also the subject of a parallel probe into possible involvement in a transnational organised crime ring, with EOCO reportedly collaborating with international partners on that front.

Background: From CID Invitation to EOCO Custody

Wontumi’s legal woes began when the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service invited him for questioning over alleged illegal mining operations, commonly referred to as galamsey.

He had previously been cautioned over accusations of mining without a licence, pollution of water bodies, and encroachment on protected forest reserves.

After honoring the CID’s invitation, he was transferred into the custody of EOCO officials on Tuesday for further interrogation on what authorities say are “related financial crimes.”

While specifics remain under wraps, EOCO sources suggest the case involves suspicious financial flows linked to illicit mining activities.

Bryan Acheampong Steps In

The political temperature within the NPP surged as Wontumi’s continued detention ignited protests and expressions of loyalty from party supporters.

Hundreds gathered outside the EOCO and National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) premises demanding his release, while some Minority Members of Parliament staged a sit-in to amplify the pressure.

As frustration mounted and efforts to secure Wontumi’s bail stalled, Dr. Bryan Acheampong quietly mobilized the resources needed to meet the GHS50 million bail requirement.

Acting with discretion, he stepped forward as a surety, a move that many within the party have described as both timely and emblematic of his stature as a unifying figure within the NPP.

Acheampong’s intervention drew swift accolades from party faithful.

NPP-affiliated WhatsApp and Facebook groups lit up with praise, hailing his commitment to party solidarity.

However, the release process hit a brief legal snag after party lawyer Gary Nimako reportedly filed for a review of the bail conditions, causing a delay.

Nonetheless, Wontumi has now officially regained his freedom and will assist the ongoing investigation from outside custody, appearing as required.

Implications for Party Politics

Dr. Acheampong’s swift and decisive intervention has not only brought relief to Wontumi’s supporters but also sharpened speculation about his future political ambitions.

His rising profile within the party, already bolstered by his philanthropic work and technocratic credentials, appears further enhanced by this latest act of loyalty.

Some analysts believe that this episode could serve as a springboard for Acheampong, especially with murmurs that he is positioning himself for leadership in the 2028 NPP flagbearer race.

An exploratory committee reportedly set up by his camp is already engaging grassroots constituencies.

For now, as Wontumi returns home under watchful legal eyes, the political narrative has shifted.

While investigations continue into his alleged criminal activities, including potential ties to international crime networks, within NPP circles, the moment belongs to Dr. Bryan Acheampong—seen by many as the man who saved a party stalwart when it mattered most.
