The Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has appealed for calm and restraint following the recent violence in the New Winneba community, warning that continued tensions could lead to further loss of lives, destruction of property and a lasting strain on relations between the Effutu and Gomoa communities.
In a statement, Afenyo-Markin expressed concern over the reported loss of lives and injuries sustained during the confrontation and extended his condolences to the bereaved families while wishing those injured a speedy recovery.
He also commended the Ghana Police Service for what he described as its prompt response, professional conduct and continued efforts to restore order and protect lives and property in the affected community.
The Effutu MP urged residents, particularly the youth on both sides, to exercise restraint and avoid actions that could escalate the situation.
He stressed that no land dispute should be allowed to cost human lives, pointing to the longstanding relationship between Effutu and Gomoa communities. “No piece of land is worth a single human life.”
According to Afenyo-Markin, the two communities have coexisted for generations, with families from both sides intermarrying and engaging in trade and other social activities.
He said their shared history should serve as a basis for resolving the current tensions rather than allowing the dispute to deepen divisions between the two communities.
While acknowledging that there are historical claims and judicial determinations concerning the New Winneba lands, Afenyo-Markin said the way forward must be anchored in dialogue, the rule of law and mutual respect.
He maintained that land disputes should be addressed through established institutions, including the Lands Commission, the courts and structured traditional engagement, rather than through confrontation or force.
The MP stressed that the legitimate interests and concerns of both communities must be recognised.
“Effutu’s legitimate interests must be protected. Gomoa’s legitimate concerns must be heard. But neither should be allowed to become a victim of violence.”
Describing himself as a son of both communities, the Minority Leader said he has a responsibility to speak with caution at a time when emotions are high.
He said the immediate priority must be to safeguard lives, restore calm and create an environment in which the concerns of both communities can be addressed peacefully and with dignity.
He further appealed to residents to ensure that the recent violence does not permanently define the relationship between Effutu and Gomoa.
Afenyo-Markin said the lives lost and people injured should remind all stakeholders of the need to prevent similar incidents in the future.
He called on the communities to protect lives, respect one another, uphold the rule of law and use dialogue and legitimate institutions to resolve their differences.
“Together, we can resolve this matter peacefully, uphold justice, preserve our historic bond and secure a prosperous future for our children.”
He concluded by praying for comfort for the bereaved families, healing for the injured and wisdom for all stakeholders to choose peace over conflict.
