Ghana’s Black Meteors are set for another important chapter in their quest to return to the Olympic Games, with Egypt confirmed as the host of the 2027 U-23 Africa Cup of Nations.
The tournament is scheduled for November 2027 and will bring together eight of Africa’s best Under-23 national teams after a qualifying campaign that is expected to begin in September 2026.
Ghana is preparing to enter the qualification race, although the Black Meteors are still waiting for the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to announce the qualifying pairings.
The competition will carry greater importance than a conventional continental youth tournament because it will also determine Africa’s representatives at the men’s football tournament of the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Under the new qualification arrangement, Africa will have two places at the Olympic men’s football tournament, compared with the three slots previously available. Consequently, the two finalists of the 2027 U-23 AFCON are expected to secure Africa’s tickets to Los Angeles.
For Ghana, the stakes are particularly high. The Black Meteors have not appeared at the men’s Olympic football tournament since the 2004 Athens Games, leaving the country facing a lengthy wait to return to the global multi-sport competition.
The team will begin its qualification preparations under head coach Desmond Ofei, with the technical team expected to focus on building a squad capable of negotiating the preliminary stages and ultimately securing qualification for the tournament in Egypt.
