Black Satellites Shake Up U-20 AFCON With Stunning Win Over Reigning Champions Senegal

Ghana’s national under-20 men’s football team, the Black Satellites, reignited hopes of reaching the quarterfinals of the 2025 CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with a dramatic 1-0 victory over tournament favourites and defending champions Senegal on Monday, May 5, in Egypt.

The much-anticipated Group C showdown saw Ghana rise to the occasion, seizing the upper hand in the early stages of the match.

Forward Emmanuel Mensah delivered the decisive moment in the 14th minute, coolly slotting a left-footed shot into the right corner of the net after a precise assist from Jerry Afriyie.

The goal not only broke the deadlock but also marked Mensah’s first of the tournament, securing Ghana’s first win in the group stage.

Jerry Afriyie, who has recently featured for the senior national team, the Black Stars, made a strong impact off the bench in Ghana’s opening 1-1 draw with the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Against Senegal, Afriyie started and proved instrumental again, though he missed a golden opportunity to double the lead later in the match.

Despite the missed chance, his assist underscored his growing influence in the squad.

Midfield dynamo Abdul Aziz Issah also earned his first tournament start and played a crucial role in stabilizing the midfield against Senegal’s high-pressure, physical style.

Ghana’s tactical discipline was evident throughout the match, a fact not lost on head coach Desmond Ofei.

“Tactically, I believe we got it right. Senegal came at us with a very direct and physical approach. It wasn’t easy, but our players showed great tactical discipline and fighting spirit throughout the game,” Ofei said in a post-match interview.

“The boys followed the game plan, stayed organized, and gave everything on the pitch. That’s all you can ask for as a coach.”

With four points from two games, Ghana now sits second in Group C, tied on points with D.R. Congo but trailing on goal difference.

The Congolese side claimed a convincing 3-1 win over the Central African Republic (C.A.R.) in the other group match.

The Black Satellites will conclude their group stage campaign against C.A.R. on Thursday, May 8 at 18:00 GMT.

A win in that fixture would seal Ghana’s place in the quarterfinals and potentially top the group, depending on results elsewhere.

Ghana, a traditional powerhouse in youth football with four U-20 continental titles and a FIFA U-20 World Cup crown in 2009, missed out on the 2023 edition of the tournament.

The team is now on a mission to reassert its dominance in African youth football under the leadership of Coach Desmond Ofei and this new generation of promising talents.

The win over Senegal, who lifted the trophy in 2023 and were widely tipped to repeat their triumph, signals that Ghana is once again a force to be reckoned with in the U-20 scene.
