CAF Slaps Four-Match Ban On Samuel Eto’o

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has imposed a four-match ban on Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT) President Samuel Eto’o following an incident during Cameroon’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) clash against hosts Morocco, a decision that has reignited debate over discipline, refereeing standards and due process at the continent’s flagship football tournament.

The sanction stems from Cameroon’s 2–0 loss to Morocco last Friday at the ongoing AFCON, a match marked by heightened emotions both on and off the pitch.

According to CAF, Eto’o engaged in misconduct during the game, reportedly making angry gestures in protest over refereeing decisions while in close proximity to CAF President Patrice Motsepe.

The incident unfolded amid mounting frustration from the Cameroonian camp over officiating calls that they believed went against their team.

In a statement released on Sunday, CAF confirmed that its disciplinary board had not only handed Eto’o a four-match suspension but had also fined him $20,000.

The continental body said the punishment followed a review of conduct deemed inappropriate for an official of Eto’o’s stature and position, particularly during a high-profile AFCON fixture.

The controversy surrounding the match extended beyond Eto’o’s conduct. Players from both Cameroon and Morocco were involved in heated exchanges, with moments of jostling that underscored the tense atmosphere.

CAF disclosed that it had opened broader investigations into violent confrontations witnessed in several AFCON matches, signaling a tougher stance on behavior that could undermine the image of the tournament.

FECAFOOT, however, has strongly rejected CAF’s decision, describing it as unjustified and procedurally flawed.
In a sharply worded response issued on Thursday, the Cameroonian football authority said the ruling “lacks any explicit justification” and questioned the speed with which the disciplinary process was concluded.

“The expedited procedure leading to this decision raises serious concerns regarding the fundamental requirements of a fair process,” FECAFOOT stated, adding that it would formally appeal the ban and fine.

The federation also threw its full support behind Eto’o, insisting that principles of credible and transparent disciplinary justice must be respected.

Eto’o, a former African Footballer of the Year and one of the continent’s most decorated players, has been a polarizing figure since assuming leadership of FECAFOOT.

His tenure has been marked by frequent clashes with football authorities, referees and even players’ unions, as he has sought to assert reforms and what he describes as greater accountability within Cameroonian football.
