The President of the Congolese Football Federation (FECOFOOT), Jean‑Guy Blaise Mayolas, has been sentenced to life imprisonment after a court found him guilty in a major corruption case involving the misappropriation of football development funds.

The ruling was delivered on Tuesday after months of investigations and legal proceedings into alleged financial misconduct within the federation.
Prosecutors accused Mayolas of diverting funds meant for football development in the country through a network of fraudulent financial transactions.

According to documents presented during the trial, the case centred on nearly $1.3 million allocated to the federation by FIFA for football development programmes.
Investigators alleged that the funds were siphoned through falsified financial records and irregular banking transactions, effectively depriving grassroots football initiatives of critical support.

Mayolas was convicted on multiple charges including money laundering, embezzlement, and forgery. He did not appear before the court during the hearing and was therefore sentenced in absentia.
The court also handed life sentences to his wife and son, who prosecutors said were directly involved in facilitating the illegal financial activities.

The corruption case also implicated other senior officials within the federation.
FECOFOOT’s General Secretary, Badji Mombo Wantete, and the federation’s treasurer, Raoul Kanda, were each sentenced to five years in prison after being found guilty of participating in the financial irregularities uncovered during the investigation.

Authorities indicated that the verdict followed eight months of extensive investigations, during which prosecutors reviewed financial records, banking transactions, and internal administrative procedures within the football governing body.

The judgment is regarded as one of the most significant legal actions ever taken against a football administrator in the country, raising serious questions about governance and accountability within football administration in the Republic of Congo.
