Fresh details have emerged surrounding the arrest of former New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for the Korle Klottey Constituency in the Greater Accra, Valentino Nii Noi Nortey, following an alleged violent domestic incident involving his wife in the United States, Gilda Nortey, a case that has since drawn strong reactions from the victim’s family.
Relatives of Gilda, the wife of the former parliamentary candidate, have publicly called for justice after she was allegedly stabbed multiple times during a domestic dispute in Pennsylvania, in the US.
Speaking in an interview, family members described the incident as a disturbing escalation of marital tensions, reportedly triggered by discussions about divorce.
According to David Gyapanin, an uncle of the victim, the couple had been experiencing disagreements, which culminated in a confrontation during which Gilda allegedly indicated her intention to seek a divorce if the situation did not improve.
He claimed that this statement provoked threats from Nii Noi Nortey, who allegedly warned that he would either take his own life or kill his wife.
The situation reportedly deteriorated further when he allegedly stabbed her three times.
Gyapanin recounted that despite her injuries, Gilda pleaded with her husband to take her to the hospital.
He allegedly agreed on the condition that she would not mention his name in connection with the incident.
However, the victim is said to have managed to access her car keys and drove herself to the hospital where she works, enabling her to receive urgent medical care.
Family members say she is responding to treatment and is currently recovering.
The family has since appealed to U.S. authorities to ensure that justice was fully served. Gyapanin stressed that the matter should not be trivialised, noting that marital disagreements do not justify violence.
He further warned that should justice not be achieved abroad, the family would pursue all legal avenues available should Nii Noi Nortey return to Ghana.
Police in Lower Paxton Township, Pennsylvania, have confirmed that the incident occurred around 10 a.m. on Saturday, January 17, 2026, along Mayfair Drive.
According to the police, first responders transported the injured woman to a medical facility, where she was reported to be in stable condition. Authorities also assured residents that there was no threat to public safety.
Nii Noi, 41, a resident of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, has been charged with several offences, including attempted homicide, possession of an instrument of crime with intent to use, and tampering with or fabricating physical evidence.
Court records indicate that he was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge David Judy, who denied him bail.
He is currently being held at the Dauphin County Prison and is expected to face a preliminary hearing on January 26, 2026, as investigations continue.
Valentino Nii Noi Nortey previously contested the Korle Klottey parliamentary seat on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party in the 2024 election but was unsuccessful.
Following that political bid, he withdrew from active frontline politics and has largely remained out of the public eye in Ghana until the emergence of this case.
